Cold Laser Therapy

Lasers play a vital role in medicine as a means of injury healing and pain management. Now you can put the healing energy of lasers to work for you. At CK Chiropractic Center, we have provided San Diego residents with cold laser therapy for many years. Read on to learn more about how you might benefit from cold laser therapy.

.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

Cold laser therapy uses a beam of amplified light, but its resemblance to other kinds of lasers stop there. Unlike a surgical laser, which does its job by burning and cutting tissue, a cold laser operates at a low-enough frequency to pass right through tissue harmlessly. This lower frequency is where the nickname "cold" comes from. This low-level laser penetrates several centimeters into bodily tissue, allowing it to treat problems affecting muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, fascia, and bones.

Cold laser therapy works through a phenomenon called photobiomodulation. The wavelength of the laser energy causes cells to produce more of a substance called ATP. Since ATP serves as the energy source used by cells to repair and reproduce themselves, these extra resources allow tissues to rebuild themselves more effectively. The laser energy also increases blood flow and fluid drainage in the treated tissues, reducing inflammation and easing pain. The combined benefits of this form of therapy make it a powerful tool for treating:

  • Acute and chronic injuries
  • Nerve damage and neuropathies
  • Muscle knots and muscle spasms
  • Chronic degenerative conditions such as arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ

Part of Your Integrated Healing and Pain Management Program

Our chiropractor can evaluate your condition and symptoms to determine whether or not cold laser therapy makes sense for your needs. If it does, we can work it into your integrated injury healing or pain management program. Cold laser therapy can support other helpful modalities such as chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, and massage therapy. The fact that it can relieve pain without medication can prove especially helpful for individuals who are already taking medication and are concerned about possible interactions with painkillers. You can undergo cold laser therapy as frequently as necessary without worrying about safety or side effects. Many people find it quite comforting and relaxing.
